Spring 2023 Newsletter

Hello from Roy,

It's that time of year again where everyone is getting excited about opening up their cottages, and enjoying the outdoors, as the warmer weather has arrived.  I hope that everyone had a great winter, and you were able to enjoy the activities that Buckshot Lake has to offer in the colder months.

It has been a very busy past six months for me and I have many of you to thank. As you know I was elected Ward 2 Councillor in North Frontenac, and your support is greatly appreciated. I won’t turn this newsletter into a municipal government column, but you are more than welcome to send me an email with any concerns, or ask me a question at the upcoming AGM.

Your board members met on April 22nd and we have some ideas we hope will interest you. We also are looking for your help with some of these ideas: more details can be found below in the newsletter.

I hope to see many of you during the summer around the lake, and remember to enjoy yourselves while at the same time respecting the environment that we live in.

AGM

Our annual general meeting has been scheduled for July 29th, 10am to 12pm at Clar-Mill Hall in Plevna. Please come out to hear what the BLA has done and what we are working on. Board members will be there to answer your questions. We are planning on having guest speakers and representatives from both North Frontenac and Addington Highlands Councils. It is also a great time to meet with neighbours and introduce yourself to new people on the lake.

Also, we may be looking for a new executive member to be elected to the board. If you are interested, please let us know as elections are held at the AGM.

MEMBERSHIP

As always membership is key to a successful Lake Association. We had just over 70 members last year; we would like to see this increase. Your membership fee of $30 does so much for the lake and surrounding area. One key expenditure that membership fees pay for are the buoy markers on the lake. It seems that every couple of years we are adding or replacing some markers. The BLA executive would once again like to thank Bob Haynes for continuing to keep boating on our lake safe. The executive still is looking for a volunteer to help him with the buoys, so if you are interested, please send an email to the BLA.

There are many ways in which you can submit payment, such as directly paying on our website. It only takes a couple of minutes. Also, if you are aware of any new residents on the lake, please give them a nudge to review our website and promote the importance of the lake association.

BASS TOURNAMENT/SOCIAL EVENT

At our last board meeting we all agreed it would be nice to reinstate some type of social event to help build community on Buckshot Lake. One idea was a catch and release bass tournament. For this to work, we need help with planning, and more importantly, someone to provide a location on the lake to hold such an event. All food and cooking equipment will be provided by the lake association. If you are interested, please send an email, or if you have any other ideas let us know. Such an event takes some time to organize so we would like to start the planning process very soon.

PHOTO CONTEST

The photo contest has always been a popular activity here on Buckshot and we will continue the tradition for 2023. Thanks to Donna Crome and Russ Brown for taking on this initiative. Over the years, we have had some extraordinary photos submitted. I know it has been very difficult to pick the winners, yet everyone enjoys viewing the submissions on our website too. As always, we will announce the winners both in our fall newsletter and on our website along with all of the pictures submitted. For more details about the photo contest, check out our Contest Webpage:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

North Frontenac has received a grant from the province for assistance with clean up from the Derecho last May. The township will be accepting brush and yard waste free of charge from May 15th to November 1st, 2023. The waste sites participating are Plevna, 506 and Mississippi.

Also in North Frontenac, outdoor fires are only permitted from 7pm to 7am, April 1st to October 31st. However, one must always check the burn ban status for updated information, which might indicate a complete ban.

At the time of this email being sent, the lake buoys have not been placed in their locations. We are hoping to have them in place by the end of the week. An update will be posted on the website.

Be Wake Aware: As our boating season approaches, this is a friendly reminder about the standard for boat wake. This means that when driving your boat at certain speeds, the wake created can be damaging to wildlife nesting grounds, create shoreline erosion, and disturb docked boats. The standard is to slow down and bow down when close to shore and in channels. Use the centre of the lake for speedier activities.
